There is always something in nothing
Paul Cayton
This Series of Images of Nothing in Particular is taken in Northallerton. Rather than seeking dramatic events or recognisable landmarks, I wanted the photographs to explore often overlooked and transisiyional areas that people through without notice or being noticed themselves. These spaces are often seemingly insignificant, yet they quietly reveal how areas of the town are used, overlooked and inhabited. Quiet Streets, fragments of architecture, empty spaces and incidental details become the subject matter.
The reason for taking these images was to draw attention to areas that exist on the margins of everyday life – places or objects that once served a purpose or people that go about their lives alone. By making this images I wanted to suggest a sense of some redundancy, absence and anonymity and show how people can drift through them without engaging with them. Through these images, I am to encourage viewers to reconsider ordinary surroundings and reflect on how ‘nothing’ can hold meaning. The images allow the viewer to slow down, notice what is overlooked, and think about their relationship between people and unnoticed spaces.Despite all this Northallerton is a vibrant town.
